Cast iron foxes head doorstop
This striking black cast iron fox head doorstop is probably the work of the Carron Company.*
This kind of doorstop was popular in England in the late 19th century and would have been placed against the door with snout pointing upward. (These doorstops took the form of traditional stirrup cups, which would have been in the form of a fox's head and the contents drunk down in one during a hunt meet)
In this case, a wooden back has been fitted (easily removed) and the piece could be hung from a wall. (However, it should be noted that this piece is particularly heavy and fixings should therefore be substantial). It is in excellent condition.
Approximate measurements:
Height: 14.5cms
Height with wooden back: 13.5cms
Base diameter: 12cms
*The Carron Company was an ironworks, established in 1759 near Falkirk, Stirlingshire. It was at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution in the UK and was one of the largest ironworks in Europe throughout the 19th century.
